Aims: Immigration

We consider applications from people who want to come to the UK to work, do business, visit relatives, take a holiday or settle permanently. We manage routes into the UK labour market for people who want to work here, deciding applications for work permits and entry under other schemes. There are different programmes tailored to different levels of skill, but all designed to meet the changing needs of the UK economy.

Nationality

We decide applications from people who want to become British citizens. We recently introduced Citizenship Ceremonies - events celebrating the award of British nationality to new citizens.

Asylum

We determine applications from asylum seekers, granting 5 years Leave to Remain (LTR) to those whose fears of persecution are well founded and integrating them swiftly into our society. We run the National Asylum Support Service which provides accommodation and subsistence to destitute asylum seekers while we consider their claims. Removing people from the UK when their claims fail is one of our priorities.
