More About The Organisation
Outdoor social and play spaces are essential for children’s interaction, expression and development. Touch Wood structures are designed to help facilitate the many different ways that children play, move, interact, explore and learn. Engagement and participation are seen as crucial for changing attitudes and realising the play potential of every outdoor space. Furthermore, the process helps to resolve conflicts and create positive bonds between different groups within the community.
We have developed innovative methods for using traditional craft techniques to involve communities in creating a product that they can use for years to come. They can be involved right from the beginning in the design stages through to the construction. We run workshops in the wood to explore the natural environment and inspire the children’s designs. Involving people in this way ensures everyone has a stake in the final product.
Possibilities for community involvement:
We have various methods for involving the community in our projects, some involving scheduled groups and some involving drop-in groups. The process is based on engaging with children’s own experiences, ideas and skills as outlined below:
1. Providing children with positive environmental play opportunities in local natural sites, eg den building in woodland, to expand their awareness of play opportunities.
2. Using loose parts, including both natural and artificial materials, for children to use and manipulate within their play settings as a ‘designing for real’ activity.
3. Creating, with children, small-scale models of outdoor playscapes that allow children’s imaginations to genuinely contribute to the final design.
4. Providing structured mobile craft workshops for children to use tools and learn traditional crafts and skills in building structures and features for themselves.
Mobile Craft workshops:
These take place in school grounds or on site at the park depending on the groups transport needs. They take place with either a scheduled group or on a drop in basis.
